How to Test a Backup Restore Without Overwriting Your Files

A restore test should prove that files can be recovered without putting the working copy at risk. Use a separate folder, device, virtual machine or temporary account, verify file integrity, and document the recovery steps before deleting the test copy.

Safe restore-test pattern

  1. Choose a small representative sample set
  2. Restore into a new folder/device — never onto the live path first
  3. Open sample files and check checksums/dates if available
  4. Record time-to-recover and missing pieces
  5. Delete only the test copy after documentation
